What is an RSD (Rich Skill Descriptor)?

A Rich Skill Descriptor (RSD) is a detailed, machine-readable definition of a skill. It helps describe the skills learned through a course, qualification, or experience in a way that can be understood by computers and systems.

Key Points about RSDs:

  • Clear Skill Descriptions: RSDs provide detailed explanations of what a skill involves, how it can be applied, and what level of expertise has been achieved (e.g., beginner, intermediate, advanced).

  • Standard Format: RSDs follow a global standard, which means they are recognised and understood worldwide. This ensures consistency when sharing credentials.

  • Machine-Readable: RSDs are designed so that systems (such as websites or platforms) can easily read and use the information. This helps with storing, sharing, and verifying skills.

  • OpenRSD: This is a library where RSDs are created and shared. It provides a place for educators and employers to define skills, making them accessible for use in digital credentials.

How RSDs Are Used:

  • When issuing digital credentials (like certificates or badges), you can link the skills gained to an RSD. This provides a detailed description of the skills and helps anyone viewing the credential understand exactly what was learned.

  • RSDs make it easier for employers, educators, or others to verify skills quickly and accurately, as the information is standardised and clear.

In short, RSDs make skill information more precise, accessible, and understandable, benefiting both the person earning the credential and those reviewing it.
